Gallery Talk, Mark My Words: Exploring Text in Art
Reading text makes up a large portion of one's time spent viewing art, and a museum visitor may spend more time looking at an explanatory label than at the object itself. Stephanie Sparling Williams, the John Walsh Fellow, Education Department, discusses the practices involved in viewing contemporary art, which are often predicated on the act of reading text in the gallery. The talk examines artworks that use text as a distinctive artistic strategy, which invites viewers to read and look simultaneously. Space is limited. Please meet in the Gallery lobby.
